Maryland’s hospitals are on the front lines of a crisis. One in five Marylanders requires treatment for mental health and/or substance use disorders, and many are seeking care in hospital emergency departments.

The Maryland Hospital Association Behavioral Health Task Force aims to strengthen our state’s behavioral health care continuum. The Task Force has endorsed MHA’s plans to study discharge delays for behavioral health patients.

Maryland hospitals are currently collecting data for a new project to identify factors that contribute to discharge delays for behavioral health patients in emergency departments. This work, which builds off an inpatient discharge delay study completed earlier this year, further explores why patients are delayed in moving from the ED to the appropriate care setting.
