In June 2015, MHA’s Council on Clinical & Quality Issues was briefed on the state’s efforts to address Maryland’s heroin and opioid misuse epidemic. Following that briefing, MHA took the lead in drafting standardized opioid prescribing guidelines for hospital emergency departments.

The guidelines, linked below, are informed by the work of the Massachusetts Hospital Association, as well as a patient-focused brochure developed by the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (MDACEP) and released in 2014. Also below are additional opioid resources for hospitals.
