History

Volunteer leaders governing hospitals, along with their executive management and medical staff leaders founded the Maryland Hospital Association in 1970.  The association was created as a forum for cooperation and communication among the state's major health care providers.

MHA works to define and measure quality standards in health care.  An integral component of this measurement process is through MHA's Quality Indicator Project®.

Quality Indicator Project

The Quality Indicator Project® operates national comparative analysis databases for health care facilities within specific disciplines of care: acute care, psychiatric care, long-term care, and home care. Nearly 1,000 facilities nationwide submit data to the Project®’s indicator sets. The QI Project® places significant emphasis on the participants’ ability to use the data to strengthen hospital leadership in overseeing patient care quality and identifying opportunities for improvement. The QI Project resources, which are provided to every participant, include data collection software, training, implementation manuals, national quarterly comparative reports, reliability surveys and analyses, free annual visits to group sponsors, graphing software, case study newsletters, and rate analysis tools.
